After many years working in private veterinary clinics and academic settings (universities), we decided it was time to do what we love. That is working with horses in the areas of equine surgery and dentistry (Prof. Dr. James Carmalt) and locomotion and lameness (Dr. Nathalie Reisbig), where we can:

Equi-CaRe specialises in mobile services at the local, national, and international levels. It is not only our experience and knowledge that make Equi-CaRe unique, but also our fundamental vision: “Knowledge-based, no-nonsense healthcare management for every horse.” Our commitment to providing optimal, financially sustainable healthcare in an ethical manner, where the horse’s well-being comes first, makes us highly sought after by our clients. Nationally and internationally, the focus is on surgical locum services by Dr. Carmalt, Equi-CaRe Locums. The local focus in Lower Saxony, Germany is on Dr. Reisbig’s area of expertise: the general health of the patient with an emphasis on mobility (lameness, body pain), Equi-CaRe Ambulance. Dr. Carmalt will complement this with his specialty in dentistry. In addition, both veterinarians offer specialized equine consulting services (consultations via phone, email, legal work, etc.), Equi-CaRe Consultation.
Drs. Reisbig and Carmalt are married and have been working together successfully as colleagues (both directly and in an advisory capacity) for many years. They have also built up a large network of international equine practitioners, specialists, and practice owners. The support and information they provide, and will continue to provide, are invaluable to the medical quality and financial success of Equi-CaRe.
Prof. Dr. Carmalt graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1998 with a Master of Arts in Biological Anthropology (MA) and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (VetMB). Immediately afterward, he was accepted into his first postgraduate training program and spent a year as an intern in large animal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). He moved to Tasmania, Australia, where he worked for another year in a small general practice before returning to the WCVM to complete a combined 5-year specialty training program in general equine practice and large animal surgery. At the same time, he fulfilled the requirements for a Master of Veterinary Science (MVetSc) degree and received a fellowship from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London (FRCVS) to complete an advanced dissertation on equine dentistry. After completing his specialty training (DABVP(Eq) & DACVS-LA), he passed the exams for Diplomate status (an internationally recognized specialty designation) and moved to a renowned equine practice in Scone, Australia, where he worked with Thoroughbred broodmares and foals.
In 2007, he was asked to return to the WCVM as a faculty member and became an assistant professor of equine surgery. In the years that followed, Dr. Carmalt became a well-known figure on the international equine lecture circuit, where he spoke on equine dentistry, head and sinus surgery, and other specialized topics. In 2012, he was promoted to professor. Due to his extensive experience in veterinary dentistry, he was invited to become one of the founding members of the Equine Division of the American Veterinary Dental College and, after passing an exam, received his third diploma (DAVDC(Eq)). A fourth followed after further studies and examinations, when he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (DACVSMR(Eq)), which specializes in lameness and orthopedic problems.
In addition to numerous publications (over 140 articles and conference reports), he completed his Ph.D. in veterinary pathology with a study on the surgical approach to a specific type of brain tumor in horses (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction). He has spent many years traveling worldwide to work and teach, and is licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Chile, Scandinavia, South Africa, Malaysia, and four Australian states. He has spent considerable time as a locum veterinarian in private practices and in academia, where he is in high demand due to his expertise. In addition, he has served and continues to serve as an expert witness in veterinary legal matters and is regularly consulted for international pre-purchase examinations.
Dr. Reisbig’s love for horses and her training in the equestrian industry began while she was living in Norway (she was born in Norway). Riding was the start, followed by a stint as an amateur racehorse trainer at age 16 and as a steward at national and international equestrian competitions at age 18. This involvement in the equestrian industry led her to Germany. For dressage riders, Germany is considered the “Mecca” of equestrian sports, and Dr. Reisbig moved to a stable near Münster to ride and train horses at a professional facility. Since she wanted to turn her hobby into a career, she decided to study veterinary medicine after learning the German language.
After completing her veterinary degree in Leipzig in 2012, she decided to further her knowledge and skills in equine medicine through an internship in equine surgery and orthopedics (also at the University of Leipzig) and a residency in equine surgery (with a focus on orthopedics, lameness, and emergencies) at Ohio State University in the United States. During her time in the U.S., she also earned a Master of Science (MSc) and a Ph.D. in Comparative and Veterinary Medicine (2018). She spent the last 7 years working in private and academic clinics (in Sweden, Germany, and Canada), focusing on equine orthopedics and sports medicine, building a large professional network, and engaging in continuing education and teaching in her areas of specialization (giving lectures and teaching for private companies, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Malaysia, the University of Uruguay, etc.).
Dr. Reisbig was recently honored for her significant contributions to equine medicine. In 2024, she received the prestigious Top Research Prize from the Thoroughbred Equestrian Health and Research Foundation (TEHRF). In addition, her commitment to animal welfare was recognized with an award from the Saskatchewan Horse Federation, underscoring her influence within the international veterinary community.
